Enjoying God Blog

This is a book that I have looked to as a reference material more than merely something to sit down and read through. The things I have read in it are valuable insights into so very choppy waters. It is well written in a manner that anyone would be able to read. I particularly appreciate the cover design. While the cover for some books is often less than desirable this books cover is completely functional because it lists all of the different topics that are discussed with the corresponding page number. I am on the fence as to whether or not I would recommend this book to a young believer due to some of the material that it covers like demonization, and just other controversial issues that a young person in the faith should not be concerning themselves with. I would however recommend this book to someone who is not new to the faith and especially to those who are in some leadership capacity in the church. It delves into the heart of these matters and attempts to offer balanced answers to each topic.

A short review of Tough Topics by Paul Horne at www.preachdatruth.blogspot.com

Tough Topics by Sam Storms sets out to answer biblically 25 challenging questions. This book as you can guess has 25 chapters each devoted to answering a question. Questions range from the inerrancy of the bible, to angels and demons to legalism and tithing. Storms answers each one biblically and with great use of scripture to prove his point. Some of these questions are amongst the most asked questions in Christianity today.

Each chapter was very well written and having this book in a question and answer format is very useful. Not only does sitting down and reading a chapter give you lots of information but it will help you in the future answer these very same questions. “But what if I forget…” you might be asking, well… pick up the book again and go directly to the chapter that you want more information on. Have questions about speaking in tongues? Go to page 276. Have a question about the original sin? Go to page 91.

This book is very useful and I would recommend it to anyone. This is a great resource. It is nice that it is put into one book for you. As you read through the chapters/questions Storms gives you more places to read about each topic in a recommended reading section. While this book could seem repetitive and just another answer this and answer that type of book, it proves that it could be useful on your shelf as a part of your book collection. As another reviewer put it “I intend on passing it along to many in my congregation who are looking for answers and need some help getting back to Scriptures. The chapters are biblically saturated, and appropriate in length. Anyone will benefit from picking up Tough Topics.”

In his book Tough Topics, Pastor Sam Storms attempts to tackle some of the most often asked questions in Christianity today. I applaud Storms’ efforts because the church must be able to answer them in accordance with the Scriptures, and Storms does a masterful job at doing so.

To pick out my favorites would be an impossible task because I enjoyed all 25 of them. His chapter on tithing was very well done; his chapters on salvation and the question of whether or not someone can lose it was top notch. I also appreciated very much his work in several of the chapters related to Angels, Demons and Satan.

A couple of quotes for your reading pleasure:

“The Word of God is the means or instrument by which the Holy Spirit regenerates the human heart. That is to say, the proclamation or communication of the Word is the catalyst for the inception of spiritual life.” (From chapter 1, Is the Bible Inerrant? pg.31)

“The basis for our security in salvation is not ultimately our righteousness or obedience but God’s promise, God’s power, God’s purposes, and most of all God’s passionate love for us in Christ. God is committed to preserving us in faith, for if we were to stumble as to fully and finally fall away, God would stand to lose more than we do. ” (From chapter 15, Can Christians Lose Their Salvation? pg. 207)

This book is definitely one you need to have on your shelf. It is one that I will be returning to often as it has already proved to be an invaluable resource. I intend on passing it along to many in my congregation who are looking for answers and need some help getting back to Scriptures. The chapters are biblically saturated, and appropriate in length. Anyone will benefit from picking up Tough Topics.
