I want to bring to your attention a new book that everyone needs to read. The author, Jack Deere, is a long-time friend of mine with whom I was in seminary back in the 1970’s. Here is the description of the book from the inside cover. Following that I’ve included my personal endorsement of this riveting memoir.

“A powerful memoir of finding beauty and friendship through the pain of loss, tragedy, and brokenness, Even in Our Darkness explores what it means to know God and to be known by him.

Jack Deere tells the true story of his life growing up near Ft. Worth, Texas, in the 1950s and the disintegration of his family following his father’s suicide. In his mid-twenties, Jack would rise to fame and success as a leading scholar, popular speaker, and bestselling author.

But despite being rescued and exalted, Jack would ultimately be crushed in the years that followed. He would lose his son to suicide and his wife to alcoholism. Only then would Jack wrestle with his own addictions, surrender control, and experience true healing.

An unvarnished story of the Christian life, Even in Our Darkness will serve as your own guide in overcoming life’s disappointments and learning to hear God speak in unimaginable ways.”

One of the great tragedies in our day, and an especially fertile seedbed for heresy, is the failure of many to develop a practical and biblical theology of suffering. Where is God in the midst of unspeakable tragedy and heartache? Jack’s book will help you find the answer. I heartily recommend it for everyone. Here is the endorsement I provided:

“I’ve known Jack Deere for nearly forty-five years. Or at least I thought I knew him. After reading his memoir, I became truly acquainted with my longtime friend for the first time. I cried. I gasped for air. I laughed. And I worshiped God. For Jack’s story is really a story about friendship with a God whose love and faithfulness are constant, whether we are on top of the mountain or walking through the valley of the shadow.”

I hope and pray you’ll get this book for yourself and your friends. I don’t have to hope and pray that you’ll read it from cover to cover. Trust me, once you start it, you won’t be able to put it down until the last page has turned.

Thanks for recommending this book. It hasn’t been released in the UK yet so I’ve placed it on pre-order on Amazon.

Couldn't put it down. Had to stop and cry for minutes at a time. I know God better than I did before I started reading it, at least more of His faithful, tender, constant love, despite the broken people we are....became clearer and brighter to me. A discovery of God our friend.
