Can We Please God?
April 23, 2013 1 Comment“What sort of parent rolls his eyes when his child falls off the bike on the first try? There is no righteousness that makes us right with God except for the righteousness of Christ. But for those who have been made right with God by grace alone through faith alone and therefore have been adopted into God’s family, many of our righteous deeds are not only not filthy in God’s eyes, they are exceedingly sweet, precious, and pleasing to him” (Kevin DeYoung, The Hole in our Holiness, 70).

How I wish evangelicals like DeYoung would include Revelation 19 in their thinking. Our righteous deeds as saints are fine linen! The filthy rags Isaiah is referring to are those deeds performed with no real intent to know God. For instance, God desires mercy and not sacrifice, means God didn't want His people bringing sacrifices if they desired no relationship or true obedience. By no means is He saying, disregard the whole Levitical system Israel, just walk humbly with Me. Fire the priests! And now, in the New Covenant, we are to seek that which "pleases Him in all respects." DeYoung should have said, "But for those who have been made right with God by grace alone through faith alone and therefore have been adopted into God's family, many of our righteous deeds ARE FINE LINEN." Otherwise, we'd be encouraged to never seek that which pleases Him.
