I assume most of you have heard of Megan Basham’s new book, Shepherds for Sale: How Evangelical Leaders Traded the Truth for a Leftist Agenda (Broadside Books). It has fast made its way up the list of best-sellers. I’ve only started my reading of it, and perhaps I’ll have more to say once I’ve finished. But I wanted to take this opportunity to alert you to a remarkably insightful and persuasive response to the book by JD Greear, Senior Pastor of the Summit Church, North Carolina.

Yes, JD is a friend of mine and I’m scheduled to speak to his staff later this year. But even if I had no personal relationship with him, I would applaud his response to Basham. It is quite long, but well worth your time to read in full. It is a model of clear, objective, evaluation of the criticisms she brings against him in her book. It is not a response to the book as a whole, but only to her comments about him.

I must say that if Basham’s treatment of other so-called “shepherds for sale” is as misconstrued and misleading as what she says of JD, I don’t hold out much hope for the book’s success.

Here is the link to the article. Read and ponder.

Dr. Storms with all due respect to your comment here on 8/14 I believe you are mistaken. There were many people who discerned that Mike Bickle was at the least someone to be cautious of and more than likely someone to avoid altogether. The fact that Francis Chan years ago tells the story of people warning him about Bickle being "creepy" is more than proof of that. I think sadly there probably were signs of his terrible behavior that were not seen because many people don't know how to look for them. I only say this because I have a relative who acted like Bickle both in personality and in sexual acts. This person fooled many friends by knowing the right words to say and deflecting issues. Being related to this person gave me (regrettably) the ability to see through the charade and call them out for the wrongs they were doing. I understand not everyone has those experiences (thank God for that) but even then, if we as Christians trained ourselves to see those personality traits, they would be visible. To reiterate, I believe there were many people who had discernment about Bickle, and I also believe that experience as whole should tell us to at least listen to the critic's message and see what the future holds, history shows the critics of Bickle were correct and we should learn from history, or we are doomed to repeat it. May God give us wisdom and discernment.

Brother Sam, perhaps reading the book first and then making your comments would be more mature. I don't know if you are right or wrong but neither do you. I hate to be so direct, but I'm as old as you are and have been serving in church strengthening a long time and I hope I have the maturity and discernment to speak this way to you. You have a voice and influence that should be more carefully used.
Dr Storms, I highly recommend you watch Jon Harris’ coverage of this situation on his Conversations That Matter YouTube channel. Harris has fairly covered Greear for years and Basham took it easy based on Greear’s public ministry. The video is called “Responding to JD Greear”
Sadly, everyone's discernment was off with Bickle, but I stand by my comments about JD.
Sadly your discernment was off w Bickle and your discernment is clearly off w JD.
