Earlier this week I posted a blog article entitled, “God is Happiness.” I took this from something Charles Spurgeon had written in his exhortation to Christians to be filled with the very joy that fills the heart of God. The more I thought about Spurgeon’s observations, the more my mind was taken back to something John Piper wrote in his book, The Pleasures of God. It is deserving of our careful and thoughtful meditation. Continue reading . . .  E...Read More

Why should Christians be filled with joy? Because God is filled with joy. And because heaven, our eternal home, is a place known for joy and bliss and we have living within us, in the person of the Holy Spirit, a down payment or foretaste of what that glorious inheritance will be. Continue reading . . .  Why should Christians be filled with joy? Because God is filled with joy. Charles Spurgeon, though on occasion depressed and despondent, held firmly to the truth that joy or cheerfulness or happiness must be the aim of every Christian. There are several reasons why he believed this to be true. Given Charles Spurgeon’s battles with depression and the way he understood those times of spiritual darkness to serve the greater good of his growth in Christ, one might think that he resigned himself to suffer in this way and put little stock in the experience of joy. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Donald Trump has challenged the Christianity of Ted Cruz while also raising questions about the nature of Ben Carson's faith. In the past, he also suggested that President Obama might be a Muslim rather than a Christian. Now, the pope has questioned the Christianity of Trump. It is a struggle, to say the least, to find anything “good” or spiritually profitable in those times when God has temporarily removed from us the sensible awareness of his presence. For some, it is nothing short of hell on earth. Whether one chooses to call it spiritual depression or what Charles Spurgeon has described as God’s “apparent desertion” of us, few things rival it for the pain and discouragement it can create in our hearts. Contin...Read More

Few things bring us joy quite like the return of a loved one from a long trip away or a reunion after years of separation. In a manner of speaking, it is much the same, if not better, when the sensible awareness of Christ’s presence returns following a season of his “apparent desertion” (Spurgeon). The sense of God’s presence is a precious gift that we should never take for granted. Of course, in another, more technically theological sense, God is always present to us whether we feel or sense him or not. The attribute of divine omnipresence is a comfort to every Christian and a threat to those who think they can sin secretly, outside of God’s purview. It is the considered opinion of quite a few that Charles Spurgeon may well have been the greatest preacher of any age in the history of the church. His gift for speaking to the hearts of men and women and bringing to bear on them the tender mercies of Christ and his Spirit is perhaps without peer. Charles Spurgeon’s periodic bouts with depression are almost legendary. Less clear would be the cause or source of his struggles. Some would go so far as to label him clinically depressed and attribute the problem to certain undefined chemical imbalances. We likely will never know for sure. But there is much that we can learn from this great man’s battles with despondency. Those who wish to delve more deeply into Spurgeon’s own experience should consult...Read More
