The Epistle of James is now Available!
October 3, 2017 by Sam Storms
Several weeks ago I announced that my entire series of sermon notes on the book of Hebrews was available on my website. Today I’m happy to tell you that all twenty-two lessons on the book of James are now posted. If you are unfamiliar about how to access these documents, simply click on Resources at the top of the Home page, and then on Articles. Look under Biblical Studies, and at the bottom of the list you will see both Hebrews and James. These twenty-two articles are essentially a verse-by-verse analysis of James. I hope and pray you will find them helpful in your life or ministry, or in both.

"The good news of the glory of the happy God"
By: Sam Storms
Earlier this week I posted a blog article entitled, “God is Happiness.” I took this from something Charles Spurgeon had written in his exhortation to Christians to be filled with the very joy that fills the heart of God. The more I thought about Spurgeon’s observations, the more my mind was taken back to something John Piper wrote in his book, The Pleasures of God. It is deserving of our careful and thoughtful meditation. Continue reading . . . E...Read More ➔

Why should Christians be filled with joy? Because God is filled with joy. And because heaven, our eternal home, is a place known for joy and bliss and we have living within us, in the person of the Holy Spirit, a down payment or foretaste of what that glorious inheritance will be. Continue reading . . . Why should Christians be filled with joy? Because God is filled with joy. Joy: "the friend and helper of all good graces"
By: Sam Storms
Given Charles Spurgeon’s battles with depression and the way he understood those times of spiritual darkness to serve the greater good of his growth in Christ, one might think that he resigned himself to suffer in this way and put little stock in the experience of joy. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Continue reading . . . Can We Judge the Christianity of Donald Trump?
By: Sam Storms
Donald Trump has challenged the Christianity of Ted Cruz while also raising questions about the nature of Ben Carson's faith. In the past, he also suggested that President Obama might be a Muslim rather than a Christian. Now, the pope has questioned the Christianity of Trump. Continue reading . . . We are not Saved by our Enjoyments of Him, but by His Efficacy for Us

We are not Saved by our Enjoyments of Him, but by His Efficacy for Us
By: Sam Storms
It is a struggle, to say the least, to find anything “good” or spiritually profitable in those times when God has temporarily removed from us the sensible awareness of his presence. For some, it is nothing short of hell on earth. Whether one chooses to call it spiritual depression or what Charles Spurgeon has described as God’s “apparent desertion” of us, few things rival it for the pain and discouragement it can create in our hearts. Contin...Read More ➔

When Absence makes the Heart grow Fonder
By: Sam Storms
Few things bring us joy quite like the return of a loved one from a long trip away or a reunion after years of separation. In a manner of speaking, it is much the same, if not better, when the sensible awareness of Christ’s presence returns following a season of his “apparent desertion” (Spurgeon). Continue reading . . . Faith's Most Challenging Trial
By: Sam Storms
The sense of God’s presence is a precious gift that we should never take for granted. Of course, in another, more technically theological sense, God is always present to us whether we feel or sense him or not. The attribute of divine omnipresence is a comfort to every Christian and a threat to those who think they can sin secretly, outside of God’s purview. Continue reading . . . Spiritual Depression a Deterrent to Pride
By: Sam Storms
Although it first strikes us as odd, there is much truth in the fact that sometimes God “hides himself from us, because by his foresight and prudence he is thus able to prevent the breaking forth of evil” (Charles Spurgeon, “The Causes of Apparent Desertion,” 6). It is the considered opinion of quite a few that Charles Spurgeon may well have been the greatest preacher of any age in the history of the church. His gift for speaking to the hearts of men and women and bringing to bear on them the tender mercies of Christ and his Spirit is perhaps without peer. Continue reading . . . Divine Sovereignty and Spiritual Depression
By: Sam Storms
Charles Spurgeon’s periodic bouts with depression are almost legendary. Less clear would be the cause or source of his struggles. Some would go so far as to label him clinically depressed and attribute the problem to certain undefined chemical imbalances. We likely will never know for sure. But there is much that we can learn from this great man’s battles with despondency. Those who wish to delve more deeply into Spurgeon’s own experience should consult...Read More ➔
