The Epistle of James is now Available!
October 3, 2017 by Sam Storms
Several weeks ago I announced that my entire series of sermon notes on the book of Hebrews was available on my website. Today I’m happy to tell you that all twenty-two lessons on the book of James are now posted. If you are unfamiliar about how to access these documents, simply click on Resources at the top of the Home page, and then on Articles. Look under Biblical Studies, and at the bottom of the list you will see both Hebrews and James. These twenty-two articles are essentially a verse-by-verse analysis of James. I hope and pray you will find them helpful in your life or ministry, or in both.

The Love of Money and Contentment with What we Have
By: Sam Storms
In the previous two articles we noted how the author of Hebrews appeals to the abiding presence of God as the incentive for our not loving money but resting content with what we have. So let’s now look more closely at the exhortation we find in Hebrews 12:5. Continue reading . . . "I will never leave you nor forsake you"

How do we keep free from the love of money? Where do we find the power to remain satisfied and content with what we have? Through what means do we resist the temptation to lie and steal and sacrifice our families for the sake of greater gain? The author of Hebrews was unmistakable in his answer. It comes from knowing and trusting and enjoying the unending presence of God. Continue reading . . . How do we keep free from the love of money? Where do we find the power to re...Read More ➔

I’m not a huge fan of ranking the comparative benefits or blessings of the gospel. That being said, J. I. Packer has argued that adoption into the family of God as spiritual sons and daughters is the greatest blessing of the gospel. Others prefer justification, the truth that through faith we are declared righteous in Jesus. Occasionally you will hear someone talk about forgiveness of sins or the indwelling of the Holy Spirit as the greatest benefit we gain through...Read More ➔

The Soul-Shrinking Wretchedness of Religion
By: Sam Storms
There was a time here in the U.S. when the word “religion” was viewed in a positive light. To speak of someone as being “religious” was a good thing. It generally meant that he or she was a sincere Christian, a faithful member of some particular local church body, a person who was moral and honest and deeply devoted and passionate about their commitment to God. Not anymore! “Religion” and “religious” have almost become cuss...Read More ➔

How Pride Poisons the Soul
By: Sam Storms
“Pride,” wrote Jonathan Edwards, “is the worst viper that is in the heart; it is the first sin that ever entered into the universe, and it lies lowest of all in the foundation of the whole building of sin, and is the most secret, deceitful and unsearchable in its ways of working, of any lusts whatsoever; it is ready to mix with everything; and nothing is so hateful to God, and contrary to the spirit of the Gospel, or of so dangerous consequence; and the...Read More ➔

One of the more intriguing exhortations in the book of Hebrews is found in chapter thirteen, verse four. If Christ is Risen, why do we Suffer?

Yesterday I drew our attention to Paul’s exhortation to Timothy to “remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel, for which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal. But the word of God is not bound! Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory” (2 Timothy 2:8-10).
