The Epistle of James is now Available!
October 3, 2017 by Sam Storms
Several weeks ago I announced that my entire series of sermon notes on the book of Hebrews was available on my website. Today I’m happy to tell you that all twenty-two lessons on the book of James are now posted. If you are unfamiliar about how to access these documents, simply click on Resources at the top of the Home page, and then on Articles. Look under Biblical Studies, and at the bottom of the list you will see both Hebrews and James. These twenty-two articles are essentially a verse-by-verse analysis of James. I hope and pray you will find them helpful in your life or ministry, or in both.

An Eternity in Hell. Really?
By: Sam Storms
Dane Ortlund posted an interesting comment today regarding the eternity of hell and our knee-jerk response. He quotes Oliver Crisp: “The traditional doctrine of hell seems terrible to our modern ears because it is out of step with our modern intuitions about how God should behave. But our intuitions about these matters are hardly a reliable guide, given what Scripture says about the noetic effects of sin. To put it another way, the fact that an infinite punishme...Read More ➔

What does it mean to be "Reformed"? (2)

In the first article of this series I briefly surveyed definitions of the term “Reformed”. My aim in what follows is to provide an explanation of the word that describes how being reformed impacts daily life. (1) To be Reformed means that you consistently acknowledge, even though you do not fully understand, God’s providential design in even the most seemingly random and painful events. How do you cope in the face of tragic events? How do you respond ...Read More ➔

I think it was A. W. Pink who once said that people love God everywhere, except on his throne. I think he was right. We love God when he performs miracles or when he heals. We love God when he blesses us with material prosperity. We love him when he answers our prayers in precisely the way we prefer and at precisely the time we think is best. And we love God when he reveals his glory. But when he sits enthroned, ruling in sovereignty over the affairs of men and women and...Read More ➔

Serving the Church Joyfully, not Under Compulsion
By: Sam Storms
I’ve always found it interesting that Peter warns Elders in the local church never to pastor or lead the flock of God “under compulsion, but willingly” (1 Peter 5:2). Why would anyone ever submit to pressure to serve as an Elder? What could possibly motivate a man to serve under compulsion? Here are some possibilities. his love or desire for the praise and approval of others his desire to avoid the disdain and rejection of those whose approval and ...Read More ➔

Strange Statistics
By: Sam Storms
At the close of 2012 quite a few surveys were taken, some of which are rather bothersome. For example, did you know that now more than 50% of all Americans own a smart phone? Of that group, 58% check it at least once an hour. I think this next statistic needs adjustment. We are told that 30% have used their phones during a meal with others. My observation in restaurants today is that it has to be far more than merely 1/3. Nearly 10% have gone on-line during a religious s...Read More ➔

We’ve been looking closely at Paul’s prayer in Philippians 1:9-11. We now see that learning how to love with knowledge and discernment is absolutely essential if we are to “approve what is excellent and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ” (v. 10). Paul refuses to let Christians settle for mediocrity. He prays that our love would grow in knowledge and discernment so we can identify what is above average, what is superior, what is of mo...Read More ➔

How to Love Others without being Gullible or Naive
By: Sam Storms
In a previous post we saw that one of the two primary characteristics of Christian love is that it is governed by knowledge. We now see as well that true love, the sort of love that will accomplish good in the life of the beloved, must be characterized by discernment. What Paul has in mind with this word is the spiritual ability to make difficult moral decisions in the midst of a vast array of competing and confusing choices. Gullible and naïve love is worse th...Read More ➔

Why Men Won't Repent

This past Saturday I spoke at a men’s retreat here in the OKC area. One of the things I focused on was why men struggle so much with repentance. That’s not to say women don’t have their own problems with it, but I typically find that men are less inclined to repent than women. They are more given to rationalization and self-defense. Why? Here are a few possible reasons. (1) Satan and the world system have led men to believe the lie that their value or ...Read More ➔

Countless Christians motivate themselves to obey the call of Christ with the constant reminder of the dreadful consequences of failure or the shameful humiliation of “getting caught” in sin.
